The Palooza story contests are a series of semi-annual short story contests (Summerpalooza [Apr-May] and Crimbopalooza[Oct-Nov]) where contestants enter a story consisting of exactly 100 words, followed by a voting period where entrants, a jury of relative outsiders and the general public vote on their favorite stories, with the entry scoring the most points winning the contest.
If there are many entries the stories that do not automatically qualify are instead split into two groups and go through their own semi-final. Ten entries will qualify from each semi-final. Entrants vote within the group they are in while the automatic qualifiers are assigned to vote in either semi-final.
Semi-final qualifying has changed a few times. In the current system the first five to qualify are those receiving the most votes from their fellow entrants, then among the remaining stories those with the most public votes complete the ten qualifiers.
In the final, all entrants vote including those who failed to qualify in the semi-finals. Public votes are taken from allotting the same amount of points as the entrant votes to the entries based on proportion of poll votes. A jury gives their votes equal to an entrant's but does not add to the points of the public vote. Most points wins.
